Emme Wyzywany, age 10 competed in the sixth, annual Susan Polgar National Invitational for Girls held at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas on July 26-31, 2009. She was one of 60 girls from 44 states vying for the title in the most prestigious all-girls national championship in the United States.
Each state is allowed one girl age 18 and younger (with a few other girls playing by invitation). Thousands of girls compete annually in a variety of events to gain eligibility.
To qualify for this event, Emme participated with twenty other players in the Qualifier Tournament held May 3, 2009, in Kenner, Louisiana. Emme earned the right to be Louisiana’s representative by winning four games and drawing one game.
Players are required to play in and complete all six rounds of the tournament. One round was completed each day beginning Sunday, July 26 and ending Friday, July 31. Emme competed against:
Prior to participating in the SPNI, Emme competed in the DCC Friday Swiss Tournament, Intermediate Section in Richardson, TX. She placed second with a score of 3.5 in a field of 31 players. In the first round Emme beat Ben Craddock (689), her second victory was against Vinay Sateesh (771P11), and finally, in the third round she maintained her winning streak against higher rated David Wroe (1175); she did not play in the fourth and final round.
