The 2009 Louisiana G/10 and G/15 Championships took place at the Holiday Inn Tower Hotel on Saturday 11/21/2009. Despite the low turnout, there was fierce competition. The tournament featured 8 players five of which were Chess title holders!

Leading the pack was multi-state champion Jim Rousselle, current regular time control State Champion Adam Caveney, the current Blitz Champion, Bernard Parun, current G/60 and G/30 Champion, Rene’ Phillips, and finally National Master Mike Papa Jr. Regarding National Masters titles, Rousselle, Caveny, Papa, and Phillips, all have received National Master titles from the United States Chess Federation with Rousselle being the only player in the tournament whose rating remained above 2200.

Phillips won the tournament defeating Papa, Rousselle, and Caveney en route to a perfect 4-0 and a performance rating of 2688! This title makes Phillips the first player ever in Louisiana to win three State Chess titles in the same calendar year. Rene also has the distinction of winning each title, G/30 with a score of 5-0, G/60 with a score of 4-0, and now the G/10 with a score of 4-0!

Adam Caveney demonstrated some great resilience and resolve by fighting through several difficult positions to garner the G/15 title. Adam can never be counted out regardless of the material count. Adam adds to his collection of state titles as well with a final round victory over Alex “The Bulgarian” Karaivanov.

Joshua Larcena was the only scholastic player to play in the tournament. Joshua uncoiled a couple of tactical shots that garnered two upsets over Vincent Glorioso and Paul Sanchez. Joshua walked away with the Scholastic G/15 title. Congrats to Adam and Josh. There was trash talk involving a possible G/45 state championship before the end of 2009, but time is quickly running out.
