Among the over 100 chess players who participated in events at the Louisiana Chess festival over Labor Day Weekend at the New Orleans Airport Hilton were 44 scholastic players who competed in the 2013 Kickoff Scholastic.  The players contested four hard-fought rounds in three different sections.

In the K-12 section, Cecilia Tisserand and her brother Miles, both students at Lusher, tied for first with scores of 3.5/4, drawing each other and defeating all of their other opponents.  Miles took first place on the fourth tie-breaker, opponent’s cumulative score, with the first three tie-breaks failing to break the tie.  Conrad Leonik, a student at Jesuit, took third place on tie-breaks over C. Skylar Randall, a student at Haynes Academy, with both players finishing with 3.0/4 scores.

Gus Weitfeldt, also a student at Lusher, took clear first in the K-6 section with a perfect 4.0/4 score.  Three players tied for second with 3.0/4 scores, Aqib Zakaria and Kevin Kim of Haynes Academy and Joseph Xia of Metairie Academy.  On tie-breaks, Zakaria took second, Xia took third, and Kim took fourth.

Jerry Chen, a student at Airline Park Academy, prevented a Lusher sweep by winning the K-3 section with a perfect 4.0/4 score.  Victor Wu of Metairie Academy took clear second with a 3.5/4 score.  Four students tied for third with 3.0/4 scores: Eric Yang, Matthew Souquet, and Caleb Chan of Metairie Academy,  and Ian Schneider of Airline Park Academy.  Yang took third on tie-breaks, Schneider took fourth, Souquet took fifth, and Chan took seventh.

Rex Williams directed the event with Cheryl Webster running the computer.  The tournament was organized by Adam Caveney on behalf of the LCA.
