Caveney Wins the 2012 State Championship

posted Dec 27, 2012, 9:01 AM by Louisiana Chess

draft written by James Rousselle, edited by Adam Caveney

Adam Caveney of New Orleans scored his second state championship title in four years with a round seven draw against defending champion James Rousselle of Metairie.  Caveney played super solid, spurning Rousselle’s gambit pawn in the opening.  (This game is discussed in full in Caveney’s article herein.)  Since a draw was as good as a win, there was no point in heading into a middle game with both kings trapped in the middle of the board, where anything could happen.  Had Rousselle won the game (and he was never close to winning), there would have been a three-way tie at the top among Louisiana players.  In addition to another state title, Adam enjoys a 2-1 series score against the five time champion.  Caveney finished with an unbeaten score of 6-1, drawing Rousselle and Ben Bailey of Lafayette.  Tying for second were Bailey and David Huang, the former Mississippi champion, who both finished with 5.5-1.5 scores.

Jake Lennon, 2005 Louisiana Champion Eryk Hargrove, and R.J. Tagorda split honors among players with ratings under 2000, each finished with a score of 5-2.  Jim MacManus and Stuart Collins, who were both elected to the LCA Board, also shared the top spot for players under 1800, finishing with scores of 4-3.  Also finishing at 4-3, and claiming the top prize for players under 1600, was Don Webster.  John Tilly and Christopher Chimento split the second place prize for under 1600 with scores of 3.5-3.5.

Despite starting the tournament with a rating under 1100, the top finish among all players rated under 1400 was David Webster, who finished with three points (yes, if you see a trend here, there is one – five years from now, if your guess for someone winning any Louisiana tournament is “D. Webster,” you will have a good chance of being correct)!  Other players under 1400 who turned in strong performances were Leila D’Aquin and Daniel Escalona.

Forty players participated in this year’s event.  The numbers were a bit lower than usual due to Hurricane Isaac.  Special thanks go out to all of the out-of-state players –  your frequent support of LCA events does not go unnoticed.  The tournament was organized by Jim MacManus and the Lafayette Chess Club, and Jake Lennon served a chief tournament director.

Here is a game from the state championship. Other games from the tournament can be found in the articles in this bulletin.

White: R.J Tagorda Black: Dr. A. Franklin 2012 Louisiana State Championship, Rnd. 2 (Annotations by R.J. Tagorda)

1.d4 d5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bf4 Bg4 [Brace yourselves for a “boring” positional game. Mr. Franklin demonstrates the strength of having even the slightest of edges.] 4.e3 e6 5.c3 Bd6 6.Bg3 Nge7 7.Bd3 Nf5 [Don’t you love how our State Champions seem to have the weirdest opening choices (looking at you Adam and your 1.f4) (ed. note: I resemble that remark.)] 8.Nbd2 Qd7 9.Qa4 a6 10.b4 O-O [9.Qa4 and 10. b4 were completely plan-less moves, a common problem for those who play the opening automatically without thought.  I should have proceeded with 10.Bxd6 cxd6 11. h3 Bf5 12. Bxf5 =. This would not have led to the most interesting position, but at least it is solid. Instead, I thought b4 “looked” aggressive.] 11.Qc2 h6 12.Bxd6 cxd6 [Still no plan for White…Black now has a clear plan involving targets along the c-file.] 13.O-O Rac8 14.Qb3 Nfe7 15.c4 dxc4 [The c4 push is premature.  My pieces are not ready to handle the Q-side pressure.] 16.Nxc4 Qd8 [16. …Qd8 was a small mistake by Black. Better is 16. …Nd5! 17. b5 axb5 18. Qxb5 Bxf3 with targets now on the K-side.  After 16. …Qd8, White has regained equality.] 17.Ncd2 Nd5 18.a3 Qe7 19.Rac1 Na7 20.Qb2 Qd7 [After 20. Qb2, I offered a draw, which I had been  playing for since the beginning.  Mr. Franklin politely declined, stating that “he wanted to play a bit more.”  The position is technically equal. I didn’t know how to proceed, but my opponent did.  The attrition begins.] 21.Rxc8 Rxc8 22.Rc1 Nb5 [Now I understand Black’s thought process: smother me by sticking a Knight on c3 and gutting my position.  It is certainly defensible, but I overreacted to the threat.] 23.h3 Bh5 24.Rxc8+ Qxc8 25.g4 Bg6 26.Bxg6 fxg6 [I messed up his pawns!  But considering that I had no plan whatsoever to follow, Dr. Franklin doesn’t care.] 27.Ne4 Qc6 28.Nfd2 Kf7 29.a4 Nbc3 [The Knight successfully lands on c3, and I cave under pressure.] 30.Nxc3 Nxc3 31. b5 axb5 32. axb5 Nxb5 [32. b5 was a major blunder.  I am a pawn down with no real compensation.  32. a5 may have led to a defensible position, but it is still uncomfortable for White. Unfortunately, I did not record the rest of the game due to time trouble.] 0-1

While the game was relatively equal throughout, Black played for the win with clear plans, while White stumbled move by move, hoping for a truce.  As normally happens in such situations, the player who actually wants to play chess wins the game. This game clearly illustrates how one must use every resource available, even a small positional advantage, if one wishes to win big games in high pressure tournaments. Thanks to Dr. Franklin for the free lesson. I wish it hadn’t been at State though.
